Gravity Return Cylinders
Single-acting hydraulic cylinders designed for vertical applications where the load's weight provides the return stroke—simple, reliable, and cost-effective.
Engineered for Vertical Motion
Gravity return cylinders power the stroke in one direction while the return is achieved by the force of gravity or the load's own weight. With fewer internal components than spring-return designs, they offer high reliability, simple plumbing, and excellent value for vertical applications.
How They Work
Pressure Stroke
Hydraulic pressure drives the piston in the working direction (extend or retract).
Return Stroke
Load's weight (gravity) brings the cylinder back when pressure is released.
Vented Side
Unpressurized side is vented to atmosphere via a filtered breather.
Speed Control
Flow controls and counterbalance valves manage speed and prevent uncontrolled descent.
Custom Engineering
We design and manufacture gravity return cylinders tailored to your specific requirements and applications.
-
Uncommon Strokes Side-load tolerant bearings and special coatings
-
Harsh Environment Seals Food-grade materials and washdown designs
-
Position Feedback Integrated sensing and multi-cylinder synchronization
Key Benefits
- Simplicity: No return springs—fewer wear parts, lower maintenance
- Higher usable force: Full bore area dedicated to the powered stroke
- Cost-effective: Reduced components and plumbing
- Robust: Handles heavy loads with appropriate valving
Operating Envelope
- Pressure: Up to 210 bar (3,000 psi)
- Speed: Up to 0.5 m/s (meter-out recommended)
- Temperature: −20°C to +80°C with standard seals
- Media: Mineral oil (HLP); water-glycol on request
- Note: Return requires sufficient gravitational force
